Beach Handball coming to the 2023 ANOC World Beach Games

An international multi-sport event held on a beach by the Association of National Olympic Committees; the 2023 World Beach Games will build a sense of community, organizers hope. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ANOC World Beach Games have been postponed to 2021 from 2023.

Indonesia is scheduled to host the Games in 2023, which debuted in Qatar in 2019. The ANOC will inspect its plans for the Games by the end of this year to confirm its capabilities as a host country.

In response to ANOC World Beach Games’ successful first edition in Qatar in 2019, the International Handball Federation (IHF) has signed an agreement securing men’s and women’s beach handball’s place on the sports program of ANOC World Beach Games by 2025.

Brazilians won gold against Spain in the final of the 2019 men’s competition. It was a thrilling penalty shoot-out, in which they scored one more goal than their opponents after losing the first set, winning the shoot-out 11:10. Denmark made it to the final in the women’s competition despite finishing only third in their group, winning both sets against Hungary, and celebrating gold.

The IHF association thanks the ANOC for trusting beach handball on behalf of the global handball family. IHF President Hassan Moustafa and international fans of the sport are pleased that beach handball will be in the ANOC World Beach Games until 2025. This dedication will provide fans with entertainment and excitement while also supporting IHF’s efforts to grow and develop beach handball worldwide.

The hope of fans and athletes alike is that their relationship will continue to be fruitful, and we wish the ANOC World Beach Games the best of luck in 2023 and 2025.

Housekeeping-wise, the ANOC has limited each edition of the Games to 14 sports. According to its technical director, Haider Farman, the World Beach Games will be given a more significant international profile in future editions.
