Antequera, the largest city in the Andalusia region of southern Spain, is home to a beautiful new sports facility that will allow local residents to get involved in beach handball much more easily. The innovative space, which is part of the Municipal Sports Complex, features white silica sand, two regulation goal areas, and an automatic irrigation system that keeps it in the perfect condition for beach handball at all times. It is open to local sports clubs and schools, and any member of the public who wishes to use it.
The new facility, which is the result of an 18,470 euro investment, will also be used by local and national teams for training, as well as tournaments. Its artificial lighting means it can be used at night, making it perfect for training during the summer months, when higher temperatures can make training during the heat of the day unsafe.
Young athletes who play with Club Balonmano Los Dólmenes were the first to use the facility at its opening event, which was also attended by the club’s president, Lourdes Melero.
Facilities like this one can help bring communities together around the sport of beach handball. They allow local residents of all ages to get involved in something fun and active, and gives them a chance to meet their neighbors, and feel connected to the place they live. They also give teams the chance to train more seriously and prepare for higher levels of competition. All of these things help bring new people to the sport of beach handball, either as players or fans, and raise its profile in communities around the world.
